Shift strategy in an automated gearbox

A TMC Mechatronics automotive expert is working as a Development Engineer (Driveline, Transmissions) at DAF Trucks NV for the so-called Brazil Project, which aims to build a new factory there. His mission is to adapt the shift strategy of an automated gearbox to meet the needs of the Brazilian market.

“We gather feedback and requirements on the Brazilian market and tune our software to their specific needs. You cannot simply use the existing European shift strategy there, as trucks drive at higher speeds (up to 120 km/h) and with higher load (74ton instead of the 44ton in Europe). I facilitate the design process. In close cooperation with the team in Brazil, I reach an optimum between the customers’ needs and the technical possibilities. I mainly work with four parties: marketing, testing, vehicle definition and engineering”, the development engineer says.

He does not speak Portuguese and has not visited Brazil yet. Fortunately, the Brazilian team are good at English. Communication is by telephone and email. “Even if you know the European market very well, you cannot just copy paste your product on a foreign market.”
