Silver Award Rob van de Pijpekamp
Silver Award winner Rob van de Pijpekamp feels honored to have won this Employeneurs Award for 2014. With his acknowledged service record, this hardly came as a surprise. The jury awarded Rob as "the best selling consultant who reaches the max in employeneurship". As the report states: "Rob has been the model employeneur for years. He is always maintaining and expanding his network. He is one of the most sought-after employeneurs. He is always on the lookout for new opportunities. This results in new assignments, both for himself and for his TMC colleagues. He is an extremely skilled engineer and very good at communicating about his work."
The total freedom to solve problems in creative ways is what makes him tick. Independence is in his DNA. Rob's roots are with TNO. During one of its reorganizations, this leading knowledge institute outsourced Rob's unit. Eventually, TMC turned out to be the organization that enabled him to be a real entrepreneur. In his job he gets the independence to acquire his own projects, while TMC provides him with the security net of a labor contract.
TNO is still one of his important customers. Especially within TNO Human Factors, he designs all kinds of tools to do research on Human Factor related issues and he is well-known for coming up with out-of-the-box solutions. This is reflected in his contract. "My expertise on motion control, mechatronics and experience in experiments with humans in the loop, is very valuable to my customers. They appreciate my creative out-of-the-box thinking, which usually solves problems efficiently and satisfactorily. On top of that, TMC offers continuity when I am not available.”
His dream to build a sports car all the way came true with his, Lotus super 7 inspired, Condor Californian. Built in1998, the car found the formal approval of the DVLA in the UK to drive on public roads, opening the gate to a lot of driving fun. This car was built to practise for the dream car that Rob really wants to build, the Condor Mulsanne. On paper, he already owns a sports car brand: Condor Sport Cars. The construction is still one for the future. For now, the restoration of his1973 Ford Escort Mk1 fulfills his wish to ‘think with his hands’ as well.
Although his first loyalty always lies with the customer, he is proud to be a member of the TMC community. He loves the openness in communication at TMC, the bundling of expertise in his cell and the exchange of knowledge across cells. "Post a question," he says, "and there is always somebody to lead you to the next step. TMC employeneurs are true colleagues."
Exemplary is his approach of TomTom – the knowledge-based traffic information provider. His expertise lead to an invitation to present a Master Class on CAN bus. The concept of a controller area network (CAN bus) is a vehicle bus standard designed to allow microcontrollers and devices to communicate with each other in applications without a host computer. It is a message-based protocol, designed originally for automotive applications, but is also used in many other contexts. With this Master Class, he not only serves his customer, but also opens up new opportunities for colleagues at TMC: an employeneur pur sang.
To Silver Award winner Rob van de Pijpekamp, coaching is one of the important assets of employeneurship. He gratefully uses the services offered by TMC. A coach helps him reflect in order to focus and to detain.
According to him, entrepreneurship is a vehicle. It is the freedom to maneuver that he is looking for. This is also how he negotiated about his contract: fewer hours per week – and, yes, a smaller fixed monthly fee – but more flexibility.
