David Iñiguez Illán: "We are growing the business together"

When David Iñiguez Illán was young, he had two passions: cycling and playing games on his computer. Since it was difficult to become a professional cyclist, he put his efforts into computer science. ‘I always loved to discover new paths with my bike. Now I do the same thing, except with my computer.’

Computer games

David’s interest for computer programming started out of boredom. ‘I was six years old when my parents bought a computer for their jewelry shop. I was allowed to mess around with it a little bit, but soon got bored because there were little games on there. So I programmed new ones myself! Racing games for example.’

It didn’t take long for David’s to decide that he needed a computer of his own. ‘I had a habit of taking it apart to try and screw it back together. I wasn’t always successful. As you might understand, my parents did not like that too much. But I wanted to learn and didn’t have my own garage to mess around in like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs.’

The best of both worlds

When David was 11 years old he found another passion: cycling. ‘If you asked me what my dream job was back then, I would have definitely answered that I wanted to be a professional cyclist. I have always loved to discover new paths with my bike. In the mountains or in forests.’ But building a career as a professional cyclist proved to be rather difficult. In the meantime David’s love for computer never wavered. So he chose to study computer science at the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

‘I did feel some doubts when I had to pick what I wanted to study. I also really liked business management and economics. Like my parents, I saw myself running my own business one day.’ Soon after his studies, David discovered that he could, even without a background in computer science. ‘I ran my own IT-business for a while, before I joined TMC. But when I had my own company, my time was consumed by all things related to business management. I soon realized that I missed computer programming too much.’ David quit his business and promised himself that he would look for a job where he could still combine management and computer science, but in a more balanced way. ‘Luckily, that’s exactly what I found at TMC.’

At TMC you are not just an employee, you are actively participating in growing and improving the company.

Checking all the boxes

During and after his education, David’s ambitions led him to many different places. He studied in Roskilde, Denmark, for a year with an Erasmus scholarship. After that he worked in India, France and Brazil. ‘I enjoyed working in different countries tremendously. I learned a lot from speaking to people with different backgrounds. From then on, I always wanted to keep working for international companies.’

So when TMC asked David to join a project for EDF Fenice in 2016, he was immediately intrigued. ‘The assignment was to design an application that functioned as an ERP and CRM-system at the same time. I was still working for another employer, but this project checked all my boxes. So I said yes.’ It was the first time David was involved with a project from the very beginning. ‘I had mainly done maintenance work on existing software up until then. Therefore it was a great opportunity for me to be involved with this project from start to finish. From design and architecture to deciding on the programming language and helping to build the software.’

The international focus of TMC spoke to me right away.

Room to grow

After David finished his project at EDF Fenice successfully, he stayed at TMC to take on new projects for other clients. For example, he wrapped up a logistics project for Airbus Madrid and worked on calculation software for BNP Paribas. Furthermore, he helped to build an online courses platform related to safety and security procedures for Tecnatom and is now working on travel technology for Amadeus.

Evidently, David has built quite the TMC resume and is planning on expanding it even more. ‘I might want to become a manager or start my own business again one day, but I want to work on my technical and soft skills more first. For example, if I feel like I need a project that challenges me more, I can always talk to a coach or my business manager. They know about my qualities and ambitions and they are always more than willing to brainstorm about other possibilities and opportunities. So there is still plenty of room for me to grow here.’
