As materials scientist, you work at research institutes or high-tech companies on complex topics in materials technology. The work will mainly be conducted in project teams of various (technical) disciplines. The topics can vary from e.g. polymers, ceramics, metals, and biomaterials to the characterizing of surfaces, adhesive technologies, optical properties and sustainability of materials. Also the areas of application can be very different: e.g. optics, high tech systems, coatings, automotive, renewable and solar energy, food and personal care. It is crucial that you have a good overview of the possible applications of your expertise and that you’re able to motivate this to others.


You have a B.Sc. degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or similar education with several years of experience in material development related topics. Through professional experience you have gained expertise in one or more of the following topics:

  • Polymeric materials
  • Metals and alloys
  • Ceramic or glassy materials
  • Nanocomposites or reinforced materials
  • Coating materials and thin film technologies
  • Advanced optic or opto-electronic materials
  • Biochemicals, biofuels and/or biomedical materials
  • Nutritional ingredients

You have expertise in the development and evaluation of new materials by characterization, testing and analysis. You know how to set up and perform experiments and analyses related to material development. Preferable, you have experience in preparing and delivering technical reports, papers, patents and presentations.

You want to be active in a multi-disciplinary team that drives technological progress. You are a team player, but you can also act independently and show leadership in the projects in which you are involved. You have a pragmatic and entrepreneurial mindset, and you tackle challenges in a pro-active manner. You have excellent oral and written communication skills and can handle multiple projects and activities simultaneously.
