TMC Employeneur Awards: Erik Huisman
‘Not just showing interest, but actually taking initiative. Not just pitching an idea, or suggesting an approach, but actually following through on your plans. Asking questions, making the right connections, helping the organization as a whole while also helping your individual colleagues — to me, that’s what Employeneurship is all about,’ says Erik Huisman, Employeneur and R&D Engineer at Océ. ‘I’m glad TMC truly supports creativity and helps you realize your ideas in such an easy-going way. It’s an important difference from most other organizations.’ For his impressive drive to go the extra mile and his continuous readiness to help, Erik was awarded a Bronze Employeneur Award 2018.
'I’ve always been interested in spending time and exchanging ideas with people from other cultures. They often have interesting perspectives on our way of life or way of thinking.'
‘I think I’ve been handed the Award for two reasons,’ Erik says, looking back. ‘Firstly, for my support for TMC’s expat community. Of course, TMC is an internationally-minded organization – not only do we have several offices abroad, but we also have specialists from all over the world coming to The Netherlands. I’ve always been interested in spending time and exchanging ideas with people from other cultures. They often have interesting perspectives on our way of life or way of thinking. Certain habits or ideas that we consider completely normal, can be very special or even exotic to them, and vice versa.’
Erik enjoys helping people. It’s just how he’s wired. As a Buddy for expats, he puts a lot of effort into making the newcomers feel at home in The Netherlands. ‘I try to help them with small, daily things that are normal for Dutch people, but can be confusing if you’ve just arrived: reading and sending forms and letters, working out the tax system, finding a good apartment, looking for a GP. I’m glad I’ve been able to help quite a few expats find their way, and I always enjoy their company and their insights. It’s both a learning experience and great fun.’
Besides helping expats set up their daily lives, Erik also helped the organization move forward in another way. ‘During my studies, I spent some time in Canada. I also did an internship at an organization that resembles the Dutch organization TNO in several ways. TNO is one of TMC’s clients in The Netherlands, we work together on a broad variety of projects, and I had the feeling a connection might be interesting. When I learned of TMC’s plans to set up office in Canada, I offered to connect TNO and the other organization. I made some phone calls and made sure the right people from both organizations got in touch with each other. After having laid the groundwork, I left the rest of the process to the Account Managers – after all, they are specialized in processes like these.’
The organizations are still getting to know each other, and it could be a while before they actually start working together – but Erik was glad to put his network and his knowledge of the two countries, as well as the two company cultures, to good use. ‘And apparently, so was the jury of the Employeneur Awards!’
'It’s a great feeling, seeing you work appreciated and recognized like that. At TMC, going the extra mile truly is rewarded.'
Erik is proud to have won the Bronze award. ‘It’s a great feeling, seeing you work appreciated and recognized like that. At TMC, going the extra mile truly is rewarded. In a way, it felt like the biggest prize was not the Award itself, but the fact that several of my fellow Employeneurs came up to tell me I deserved the recognition. Yes, that really meant a lot to me.’
