TMC Employeneur Awards: and the winner is.. Luc van Roey
‘I don’t like to set small targets for myself,’ says TMC Employeneur Luc van Roey. ‘For me, the sky is the limit. My dream is to be CEO of Porsche one day. Of course, the chances that I’ll actually get there are slim to none. But that doesn’t mean I can’t dream about it.’ It’s precisely this kind of ambition, combined with his contagious enthusiasm and his persistence, that earned Luc his Employeneur Award in April.
Last September, Luc joined TMC Belgium. When he started at Dispack, a front runner in the Food & Beverage industry, the idea was that he’d work there as Project Manager. He’d lay the foundations for a new project and he’d provide support and guidance to Dispack’s team. Things turned out differently. It’s not that Luc didn’t do all those things – he just did more – a lot more. He was responsible for a 1,000% increase in Dispack’s overall output. Currently, he is head of Dispack’s office in Antwerp.
‘I always try to challenge myself and others to go the extra mile, in a satisfaction-driven organization where everyone can be a winner,’ Luc says. ‘I don’t like to limit myself to my office, or to client meetings – I enjoy that kind of work too, but I prefer to help the company in every way I can. So when I heard there were some issues with Dispack’s older machines, I couldn’t help myself and started tinkering with them. Until then, whenever the machines broke down, the problems were mostly tackled by focusing on the symptoms – that is, on short-term solutions. I decided to follow the problem to its root cause and to come up with a long-term solution. ’
To say that Luc worked hard on improving the machines, while still fulfilling his responsibilities as Project Manager, would be an understatement. ‘I made a lot of extra hours, worked as much as I could. I knew I had to put my personal life and my hobbies on hold – but I also knew that sooner or later the company would be able to reap the benefits of all that work.’ It’s hard to think of a more deserving winner of an Employeneur Award.
So, what’s next for Luc? Time to rest on his laurels? Absolutely not. His success at Dispack and the recognition he received at TMC have made Luc even more ambitious: ‘I’ve always wanted to work abroad. Recently, there have been talks with TMC about a possible step to the United States in 2018. It would be a great opportunity for me, but at the moment I’m also really enjoying myself over here... So you can see it’s a tough dilemma.’
Whatever choice Luc will make, there will be some measure of regret, he says. Then, laughing: ‘Having to choose between several wonderful opportunities – I suppose this is a good problem to have.’
